In 2014, Humans of Bombay came into existence on Facebook, founded by Karishma Mehta. Its purpose was unmistakable: to bridge isolation through narratives. Mehta's aim was simple – to offer comfort to unseen struggles, fellowship to the joyful, support to the resistant, and to embrace every story wholeheartedly.

Yet fate had bigger plans in store. What began as mere sharing evolved into a massive community. Today, over 3.2 million individuals discover a refuge within it. A single tale grew into an archive of 6000 and continues to expand.

How It All Began

Along the scenic expanse of Mumbai's Marine Drive, an unforeseen meeting took place – a destined encounter between Karishma and an anonymous stranger, sparking the extraordinary journey of Humans of Bombay.

Recalling the period before the project took shape, Karishma describes her walks along Marine Drive, seeking to connect with varied individuals. Numerous people turned down her approaches, but amid the many rejections, a middle-aged widow agreed to speak. In the soft sea breeze, they shared a conversation, intertwining the strands of their different lives. A spontaneous exchange that connected unfamiliar hearts. As their dialogue ended, the woman's grateful words stood out, highlighting the unforeseen comfort Karishma had provided.

Throughout the past eight years, Karishma's path has been profoundly touching, weaving together stories as beautiful as the people they depict. What started within Mumbai's limits has now surpassed geographic borders, growing into a worldwide celebration of human spirit. Humans of Bombay, a narrative that goes beyond local boundaries, has established itself as India's leading storytelling platform, revealing the fabric of shared human experiences that transcend regional confines.

Since its launch in 2014, the platform's reach has grown significantly, gathering a diverse array of stories that cover the full spectrum of human life. In a recent discussion, Karishma emphasized that their total contributions have exceeded 15 crores, directing funds toward surgeries, education for the underprivileged, rehabilitation of women trapped in the sex trade, and even obtaining justice for a man wrongly jailed in a bomb blast case.

Karishma quickly raised 23 lakhs for Ali Bhai, who had endured 23 unjust years in prison overnight.
