He grew up in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, where his father worked as an electrician and his mother was a homemaker. He is the founder and CEO of BizProspex, a data-selling company with over 100 employees and offices in Burhanpur and Nagpur.
Murtaza Amin, hailing from Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, has transitioned from a modest upbringing to becoming the founder and CEO of BizProspex, a successful data-selling company with a turnover of Rs 8 crore and over 100 employees.
BizProspex, formally registered as Prospex Network Pvt Ltd, was established in 2013 after Murtaza, feeling disillusioned by the prospects of a Tier 3 college degree, dropped out of engineering studies in Jalgaon. His journey began at 19 with an internship at PriceBaba, an electronics price comparison platform, where he developed a foundational understanding of data collection, analysis, and marketing relevance.
In 2013, Murtaza began freelancing for PriceBaba, simultaneously nurturing a goal of returning to Burhanpur to establish a business after saving Rs 10 lakh. In 2016, with savings and a loan of Rs 3 lakh from a California-based customer impressed by his work, he returned home to set up an office.
The single-person operation evolved as Murtaza hired employees, achieving significant milestones in revenue growth, reaching Rs 1 crore in 2017, followed by Rs 5 crore during 2020's COVID surge, and ultimately Rs 8 crore.
BizProspex serves a broad clientele globally, with companies like Walmart, E2E Network, and others, and remarkably only 2% of sales cater to the Indian market. The company’s business model is analogous to a subscription service, selling various data products including executive email lists, global sanctions information, and specific industry sector data, while also offering a suite of services like database solutions and lead generation.
Murtaza shared insights on sourcing data, explaining how their operations track nearly 1,000 global events annually and utilize job aggregators, while third-party purchases supplement their data pool.
The challenges of operating in Burhanpur were notable; Murtaza emphasized the importance of training rather than simply hiring experienced professionals, focusing especially on recruiting women to cultivate a supportive work culture. Providing a safe workspace was paramount, as he welcomed family visits from potential hires, ensuring job security and respect for women.
Flexible working arrangements emerged, allowing employees to split their days between home and office, facilitating a work-life balance that has notably reduced attrition rates. The pandemic shifted preferences towards a slower lifestyle, providing Murtaza with an opportunity to capture talent unwilling to move to larger cities.
Looking ahead, Murtaza aims to expand BizProspex's global footprint while advising aspiring entrepreneurs to cultivate sustainable businesses without relying solely on external funding. At 34, he has completed BA and MA degrees in entrepreneurship through distance learning with IGNOU and enjoys lengthy travels for deeper cultural understanding, covering all Indian states and over 15 countries. His inspiring journey from humble beginnings to corporate success exemplifies the potential to realize one’s dreams through determination.
