Women Entrepreneurship in India: The Shero Initiative

Sairee Chahal is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor, and advocate for women's internet initiatives. Her work at SHEROES is based on two core insights: first, technology is a massive enabler, and second, women are not getting a seat at the table. She has been empowering women since 1999 through SHEROES, an online platform that provides support, entrepreneurship opportunities, and employment resources.

Globally recognized for her contributions, Chahal is an Aspen Leadership Fellow and holds accolades such as the Devi Award and the Cartier Award. Her achievements have earned her a place in Business Today's Most Powerful Women in Indian Business and recognition at the L’Oreal Femina Women’s Award. Chahal's journey into entrepreneurship was serendipitous, sparked by her experience working through a company's lifecycle. Drawing inspiration from successful social initiatives like Amul and cooperative microfinance, she conceptualized SHEROES as a tech-driven platform for women, initially intended as a jobs and careers community that evolved into a comprehensive resource tailored for women.

Understanding the barriers faced by women, especially in India, Chahal leverages technology to empower them. The Quest for Safety and Empowerment

The importance of safety in today’s world is crucial, a sentiment echoed by many who believe that restricting their market to women may limit their reach. However, this focus is integral to the value proposition for SHEROES and its community. Most users are aged between 21 to 45 years, predominantly educated graduates, many of whom are married with children. In smaller towns, where job opportunities are scarce and safety concerns prevail, motherhood is often viewed as a liberating aspect of their lives. Many of these women are actively seeking new paths for personal and professional development, frequently pursuing loans to acquire necessary technology such as smartphones and laptops.

Sairee sheds light on the entrepreneurial spirit prevalent among women in India, noting that more women are engaged in entrepreneurship compared to men, largely due to the higher number of men in the informal workforce. Within SHEROES, beauty and related industries dominate, representing significant avenues for micro-entrepreneurship. The accessibility of mobile technology has facilitated this growth, allowing women to tap into beauty services through innovative business models like salon-in-a-box concepts.
