EARLY LIFE Shaheen Mistri was born on March 18, 1971, in Pune, India into a Parsi family and grew up in different countries as her father was a senior banker at Citigroup. He received primary education at Jakarta International School and Greenwich Academy. He began volunteering at the age of twelve.
After completing his undergraduate studies, he returned to his hometown. During this time, he became aware of the inequalities in the Indian education system. He then decided to go to St. Xavier's University and then the University of Mumbai to pursue a BA in Sociology. He also earned a Master of Education from the University of Manchester. It started with just 15 students, but today it serves more than 15,000 children in Pune and Mumbai. He received support and funding from his parents, friends, and Citibank. Teach For India Shaheen met Wendy Kopp, Executive Director of Teach For America, in 2006. It was at this point that the idea of founding a similar organization in India came to her. His intention was to bridge the educational gap between the privileged and the underprivileged in India. Later, in the summer of 2008, his dream of "Teach For India" came true.
