Baby care products startup she started with Rs 15 lakh is poised to hit Rs 100 crore turnover in its 4th year
What started as a search for quality baby care products for her daughter eventually led Malika Data Sudan to launch her startup, which is now on track to reach revenue of Rs 100 crore in its fourth year. Malika's dream run started in June 2016 when she launched her startup Amish Consumer Technologies Pvt Ltd with Rs 15 lakh and hit the market with stretch mark cream, breastfeeding products, personal care products facial and hair care for new mothers under The Marque Moms Co.
The company's first year turnover was Rs 2 lakh which jumped to Rs 24 lakh the following year and then started to grow at a rate of 3 times a year. Today, The Moms Co offers a wide range of 31 products including skin care products for babies and moms. While a diaper rash cream costs Rs 199, gift sets with an assortment of products can cost Rs 2,499. Being an army girl, she lived all over the country. “Since my dad had a transferable job, our family has experienced different cultures,” says Malika. In Pune. It was the first time I left home and I lived alone. After graduating, I joined CMS Computers in Delhi as a center manager, where my job was to convert people to join. A year later, she decided to take an MBA from Webinar Institute of Management, Mumbai. After the MBA, she joined ICICI Bank as an executive assistant. In 2008, she married Mohit, an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, who worked as a consultant at McKinsey. A year and a half later, Mohit got a job with McKinsey London and in December 2010 Malika, three months pregnant, quit her job and joined her husband.
"I had a lot of fun there and was really happy with the new culture and the new way of life. We were the first couple of our friends to have a baby, so we made very conscious choices. Myra, my first child, was enrolled in a class when she was 3 months old and my family didn't understand why we were doing it. However, we had our own way of raising Myra", says Malika about her first experience of maternity. It was only after they returned to India in 2012 with a year or The Child in tow that Malika ran out of baby care products she had grown accustomed to in London. He had to get them from abroad.
"We had a red suitcase, which my husband took with him on the trip, which was full of things for Myra whenever Mohit came back from a trip abroad. There were times when he was close to it, but there was no space for her stuff,” says Malika. “In the meantime, we asked friends returning from abroad to buy baby care products like moisturizing lotions, diapers and wipes. But it got boring, and I had to switch to Indian brands. While pregnant with her second daughter, the eldest daughter Myra was diagnosed with eczema dermatitis and the pediatrician advised to stop using a particular lotion, which had caused the condition.
A small change had caused so much agony to my son. I had read that the skin is there. Is used on the skin I had to be more careful with Myra, we had to ask friends to buy products for Myra again because Mohit did not travel often anymore. Malika's second daughter was born with childhood asthma. "We had to be extremely careful with her. We couldn't use perfumes, allergens which could trigger asthma. The doctor said, 'your daughter will be fine if you're careful'. Meanwhile, I checked out various Facebook groups and discovered many natural products for kids and that's how The Moms Co. was born,” he shares. Amish Consumer Technologies was established in June 2016 and The Moms Co. brand was launched in March 2017.
“We initially secured Rs 1 crore from Angel Investors, and we started our journey,” says Malika. Started with Malika, Mohit and a single employee, a scientist who was behind the development of toxin-free products." We create the products and a third party produces the packaged products for consumers, which are then sent to the four warehouses in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Gurugram. Each product is thoroughly tested for quality.
